Day 4: “Practice Makes Imperfect” by Michelle Sullivan (Women Ministry Team Member)

Read: 1 John 3:4-6

Review: Yikes! This seems like really bad news because I committed a sin just this morning. Is John telling me that I do not know Jesus because I sinned? I, like Paul, do the things I shouldn’t do and don’t do the things I should do (Romans 7:15) … which includes sin. The good news is that commits sin in this passage is in the present perfect tense which basically means “practicing sin”. My son Tanner wanted to be a good pitcher, so he intentionally practiced pitching hour after hour after hour. Scheduling time to practice adultery, gossip, stealing or lying means we have not seen or known Jesus. If we are practicing sin hour after hour the Holy Spirit is not in

us, as He would not let us perfect sin. We will all sin, but if we are saved, we will not set out to get good at it.

Reflect: Is there a sin that I am getting good at because I’m showing up to practice? Have I truly confessed Jesus as my Lord and Savior? Holy Spirit, reveal to me any area that I need to confess and repent and convict me of my righteousness if I start to practice sin.
