1st John Devotional - Week 4, Day 2
Day 2: “False Lashes” – by Brandi Nelson (Worship Team Vocalist)
Read: 1 John 2:29
Review: Appearances often deceive. John warned of masquerading antichrists deceiving believers about their identities. Throughout his letter, John offers evidence and assurances of eternal life through Christ, despite ungodly confusion sashaying around God’s children.
Knowing Christ is righteous, gives born-again “branches” (Jn 15:5) confidence to recognize believers by their actions. Doing what is “right” in God’s eyes, however, looks quite different from what the world considers “right.” For example, Jesus was whipped for our sins: the innocent appearing guilty, receiving lashes that were never His. Godly righteousness is humble.
Love. Comes. Down.
Jesus was high and lifted up on a tree…not on a stage, not on a social media platform. Righteousness never promotes or parades itself in the name of “doing what is right,” but instead, humbly bears the image of Christ crucified.
Reflect: Why is it important to identify true believers today? When I do what is “right” before God, do people see me? Or do they see Jesus?
