1st John Devotional - Week 2, Day 3
Day 3: “New/Not New” - by Paul Bodine (Men’s Small Group Leader)
Read: 1 John 2:7-8
Review: In this passage, John uses the same language he used to begin his version of Jesus’s life on this earth, “In the beginning was the Word”. Then, when referring to the previous verse, he writes that this is “no new commandment” but one “which you have had from the beginning”. Then he changes and says that there is a new commandment. So, what’s new about it? This: what is true in Jesus is now ALSO true in us, that God’s true light is now shining in us as well, and that the incomprehensible darkness is passing away and out of our lives by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Reflect: Jesus told Pharisees in John 9 “If you were blind you wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see’, your sin remains.” God, as your child of light, do I “see” things as they truly are? What should I do about it?
