1 John Devotional - Week 5, Day 5
Day 5: “Keeping it Simple” – Mordecai Jasper (ACC Elder)
Read: 1 John 3:23-24
Review: The apostle John provides a simplified version of God’s will for the Christian life: 1) believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ; and 2) love one another as He commanded us.
Why is believing in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ so important? Because at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Joseph was told to name Him Jesus because He will save His people from their sins. Now that’s why we believe in His name.
Do we really need to be commanded to love one another? Are we often too self-centered, busy, or preoccupied to love one another? Obeying these commands shows that we are abiding in Christ and Christ is remaining in us. When that remaining takes places, we can bear much fruit. Are you obeying these commands?
Reflect: Which command do I find it easier to obey: Believing in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ or loving one another? Why? How might my soul’s brokenness (holes, wounds, and rejections) prevent me from believing in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ and loving other believers?
